A new system which alerts charities when they have been left money in wills is to be established by HMCTS.
Charity representatives are being invited to help establish a new service that delivers a sustainable and efficient arrangement for the sector. The move follows a decision to end HMCTS’ current arrangement with Smee & Ford, which has provided a paid-for notification service to participating charities.
The current service is essential for charities, giving them timely information on any forthcoming legacy gifts. This in turn can help charities forecast legacy income and plan how they spend those donations.
It’s reassuring to see that Government recognises how important this service is for the charity sector, that new arrangements will be drawn up and that the charity sector will have a key part in that. But the next steps here will be critical.
